Prevalence of Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Apparently Healthy Urban Adult Population of Kathmandu
A large community-based study conducted in Kathmandu Valley among 5,530 apparently healthy adults (mean age 38 years) revealed a high prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors. The findings showed 29.3% tobacco use, 32.7% alcohol consumption, 75.4% inadequate fruit and vegetable intake, 61.1% low physical activity, and 41.3% overweight/obesity. Additionally, hypertension (26.4%), diabetes (5.3%), and dyslipidemia (86.9%) were highly prevalent, with significant differences across age and sex. The study highlights an alarming burden of lifestyle-related risk factors, emphasizing the urgent need for preventive strategies to combat cardiovascular diseases in urban Nepal.
