A decade ago, Nepal witnessed one of its largest heart health initiatives—the 11-day mega heart camp of 2014, led by Dr. Om Murti Anil. The camp, initially planned to screen 5,000 young adults, exceeded expectations by providing free heart check-ups, blood tests, ECGs, and counseling to over 5,500 participants from diverse backgrounds. Beyond medical service, it served as a landmark research project authorised by the Nepal Health Research Council, generating vital data on cardiovascular risk factors in seemingly healthy urban populations. With over 200 volunteers, mostly medical students, the camp also reflected the spirit of selfless service, awareness, and research at a time when heart disease was rarely a public concern.
The initiative, funded largely by Dr. Om’s personal savings and supported by family and friends, highlighted humility, dedication, and visionary leadership. Its findings, launched on World Heart Day, revealed alarming levels of heart disease risk factors and underscored the importance of prevention in a country where non-communicable diseases now account for over 70% of deaths. This pioneering effort not only earned Dr. Om national recognition, including an NHRC research award, but also reshaped Nepal’s public discourse on heart health. A decade later, the camp stands as a legacy of service, research, and awareness—a milestone in preventive healthcare whose impact continues to resonate.
