About me

After completing basic education from his own village, he achieved MBBS degree from College of Medical Sciences, Bharatpur (under scholarship) and MD Internal Medicine from Institute of Medicine (TUTH) and was awarded gold medal. He developed interest in Cardiology from 3rd year of his MBBS. He was one of the luckiest Nepalese doctors, who got admission for the course of DM in Cardiology at AIIMS, New Delhi. He was not only the first Nepalese, but also the first foreigner to join this superspeciality course (3 year) of this prime institution of Asia. Dr Om worked hard and performed exceptionally well during his DM residency and passed his final in 2011.

After completion of his cardiology training, he joined Manmohan Cardiothoracic Vascular and Transplant Centre (MCVTC) as an assistant professor in dept. of cardiology and worked for three and half years. He worked as cath lab chief in this center and started all invasive cardiac procedures for the first time. Since the establishment of cath lab in this centre, he performed wide range of cardiac procedures with high success rate.

He was the only DM cardiologist teacher to guide the DM cardiology residents. He was coordinator of DM cardiology residency programme and was actively involved in all kinds of teaching learning activities for newly started DM programme in IOM. He worked hard to improve academic activities of this new training programme in country. He taught   his DM residents basics of cath lab techniques.

He is also author of a very popular and health informative book “Ma Pani Doctor” (www.mapanidoctor.com) written in Nepali language He was principal investigator of a recently conducted research (Prevalence of Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Healthy Urban Adult Population of Kathmandu valley), which is so far the largest study in the field of prevention of heart disease in Nepal involving over 5500 healthy individuals.

He is presently working as a director of Division of Interventional Cardiology in Grande International Hospital (GIH), Dhapasi and consultant cardiologist at Heart Clinic,Maharajgunj,Kathmandu.

Experience in field of cardiac intervention (Invasive Cardiology)

He performed more than 1700 invasive cardiac procedures over a period of about 2 years during his stay at manmohan cardiothoracic vascular and transplant Centre, Maharajgunj in Kathmandu. Other than Coronary Angiography (CAG), he had performed about 400 Coronary Angioplasty (Elective ,Primary and Complex), more than 125 Pacemakers (Single & Dual Chamber, CRT, ICD) , more than 75 PTMC (Balloon mitral valvotomy) , Aortic & Pulmonary valvotomy; Device Closures (ASD, PDA Closure) and few paediatric cardiac interventions too.

During his training at AIIMS, he has performed and participated in over 2500 cardiac procedures, which included almost all fields of cardiac intervention. He believes that performing intervention may be an easier task, but it is not easy to select an appropriate procedure for a particular patient.

One shouldn't focus excessively on doing more intervention; rather clinical outcome and benefit of patient should be kept as top priority. Since; sometime doing no intervention is beneficial for the patient's health outcome. High safety and good procedural & Clinical outcome should be goal for each interventional cardiologist for his patient.

Experience in field of Preventive (Non Invasive) Cardiology

His competency extends beyond the field of intervention. He is equally experienced and interested in clinical cardiology, critical care and general medicine. He performs all forms of echocardiography for both adult and children. He is also extensively trained in Paediatric cardiology. His knowledge & experience in treating hypertension, Heart failure, Diabetes, Arrhythmia etc. are unmatchable. He believes in evidence based medicine and practice as per the international guidelines & recommendations. He always takes into consideration of local circumstances like economy, education and other difficulties and individualizes his practice of medicine as per need of a patient.

He believes that treating hypertension, Diabetes, High Cholesterol and other conditions may be an easier job; but preventing development of serious heart problem in these patients in future may not be an easy task. Complete evaluation of risk factors, appropriate and minimum use of medications, more stress on lifestyle modifications are key factors in preventing heart problem in an individual. Overall, educating patients and involving them in their treatment is main foundation of Dr. Om practice in field of non-invasive cardiology. He also stress more on lifestyle modifications rather than straight forward starting treatment for hypertension and other conditions.
